Joint Statement from Outgoing and Incoming Board Chairs

Farewell from Reid Adler BOT Chair 2009-2010

This month marks the annual change of Board officers as a new Church year begins on 1 July.  I am very pleased to hand the gavel to Joan, who has lead or participated in every major Board activity this year.  The Board is in exceptionally good hands!

I deeply appreciate the opportunity to serve as Board chair, and I am proud of the Board’s accomplishments this year.  I acknowledge with great respect our Minister and excellent staff as well as the good humor and commitment of so many people on our Hill of Dreams  who guide our worship, teach our children, participate on our committees and councils, organize our programs, and clean up after our meetings and parties.  Certainly, we have some real challenges ahead in the realm of finances and stewardship.  Yet we do have a path to follow that is marked by our new Mission and Vision statement, and also by the trust and sharing that brought us together in community to say what is important to us as a UU congregation.  We will find our way together!

 With thanks and love, Reid.

Welcome from Joan Darrah – BOT Chair 2010-2011

It has been a true pleasure and incredible learning experience to serve as the BOT Vice Chair. Thanks in large part to Reid’s willingness to keep me in the loop on everything that was going on, I feel well prepared to take over as the BOT chair.  I am honored to have your trust and confidence and look forward to continuing on a path to make MVUC the best it can be. On 11-12 June, the new Board held an extremely productive retreat at Wolf Run (thank you, Pam and Bruce Tinker!) and we are all energized about the year ahead. As part of the retreat we developed some specific goals for the year ahead that we hoped to accomplish in partnership with the Program Council, Staff, Committees and Members of the congregation.

The Board’s goals for 2010-2011 are:

**To improve MVUC’s financial situation through intentional, responsible stewardship
**To energize and expand MVUC’s membership
**To expand and support spiritual development for the entire church community
**To re-examine MVUC’s building renovation project and develop a  recommended plan of action
** To improve the appearance of MVUC’s facilities

I am especially pleased that we have made a firm commitment to undertake a comprehensive review of our financial situation to help us break out of a cycle of budget and fiscal shortfalls and to create a financial plan for resources which will fulfill our commitment to practice intentional, responsible stewardship. To lead us in this effort, we have chartered the Vision and Resources Task Force, under the capable leadership of Jim Potter and Becky Brandt, and contracted with Larry Wheeler, a UUA consultant, to help us develop a comprehensive plan to get our financial house back in order.  As part of this effort, with the gracious assistance of Sue and Howard Lamb who guided us in the development of our new Mission and Vision, we will develop an operational plan.

In short, I am delighted to be part of this wonderful community and look forward to serving as your BOT chair for the upcoming year. Please continue to share your ideas and thoughts with me and the other BOT members as we are all committed to making MVUC and Our Hill of Dreams the very best it can be.

With love and respect, Joan
