GENEROSITY - Mar 2011

Gregory Payne III was cleaning up his grandmother’s backyard in Richmond, Indiana last spring.

He noticed a pile of folders on the side of the highway adjacent to her property. He opened the folders and discovered $1,400 in cash along with several documents. They belonged to a local charity. He told his grandmother and the two of them contacted the agency to return the folders, including the cash. The folders had been stolen from a safe. What impressed the CEO of the agency was that Gregory Payne III was seven years old and already so generous.
At what age does generosity start becoming a part of who we are as moral and ethical people? What causes us to stop being generous? And why do we stop expecting others to be generous, even a seven-year-old? Are your expectations low for your own generosity? How about for others to be generous?
Some of the questions we’ll ponder this month.
Cheers, Kate Walker
