LED Lights

Even though we know that we are "wasting energy" when we use strings of lights during the holidays, it is sometimes hard to forgo this pleasure.  But, you can significantly reduce your impact by replacing your incandescent lights with LED lights.  LED lights are long lasting, consume 90% less electricity, and are virtually maintenance free.  They operate at a much cooler temperature than incandescent lights, emitting virtually no heat.  Sound ideal?  Well, much better, at least.  If you want clear/white ones, though, don't get the "cool white."  They appear blue.  You probably want to buy ones called "warm white," which are closer to the color you are used to in white lights.
