Why You Will Never Use a Plastic Bag Again

As many of you know, I am a freak when it comes to limiting plastic bag use.  I go up to friends in line and offer to help them get stuff out of a store if they'll do it without taking bags.  I use all pockets, my teeth, etc. to avoid taking a plastic bag.  And, I do return to my car or leave a store if I forget cloth bags.

Why?  Pollution by plastics is clearly out of control.  Just one example is the Pacific Ocean Trash Vortex swirling in the North Pacific at least twice the size of Texas and consisting of mostly small plastic particles.  Also, I know I am making a difference, no matter how small.  The Sierra Club says that for each 13 plastic bags not used, we save enough petroleum to drive a car one mile.  And, they also claim, if you use cloth bags for one year, you can keep about 400 plastic bags from use.  Even if you take your plastic bags back to the store to "recycle," the plastic will still be here on earth for thousands of years.

One year ago, I pledged to try to not take a plastic bag from any store.  I am happy to say that I have generally succeeded, except for produce bags.  I still have difficulty with loose string beans and such.  But, through MVUC's Green Sanctuary Committee, we will now have reusable produce bags, made from nylon, for sale.  Dick Schaffer sells "green" products on the third Sunday, every month, year round.  Please check out the produce bags (cool, huh?) and other supplies that we can use to help us walk more gently on this earth.
