Battery Recycling

I keep finding new reasons to salute our local hardware store in the Hollin Hall Shopping Center - The Village Hardware Store - at 7934 Fort Hunt Road.  The most recent reason is that my rechargeable toothbrush will no longer hold a charge.  I know enough to know that I cannot just throw it away.  I have to recycle the batteries.  So, I went to the Sonicare website, the company that manufactured my toothbrush.  It says you can't throw it away.  You need to recycle it.  And, they tell you to break it apart to get at the batteries (which took a hammer and two screwdrivers used as pry bars.)  But, it also says they don't take the toothbrushes/batteries back.  "Look for your local recycler."  Well, who's that?

It turns out that our own Village Hardware Store recycles throw away and rechargeable batteries.  Rechargable batteries are found in cordless power tools, cell phones, cordless phones, laptop computers, digital cameras, two-way radios, camcorders, and remote control toys.  Village Hardware also recycles fluorescent bulbs.  They sharpen knives and lawnmower blades.  They do some lamp repair.  They repair storm and screen windows.  They sell individual screws, nuts, and bolts, so there is no waste or extra packaging.  Plus, they are knowledgeable about their products, give great advice on how to fix things, and are very helpful and friendly.

So, as we try to practice our 3 R's - Reuse, Reduce, and Recycle, The Village Hardware is there to help!
