Oh, to make a guest welcome yet not so much that they never leave. It's the bane of every host. Or, if one is the guest, to keep from being too much of a burden upon the host. After all, we would like the door to be open for future visits.
At one time hospitality was sometimes necessary to save the life of a traveler without shelter or nutrition. In ancient Judaism, with the dangers of the desert always a threat, it was considered a sin to turn away a traveler.
But hospitality is not just about food and a bed for the night. Hospitality is also about opening one's heart to the stranger (and to the strange). A heart that serves as a hospitable hearth has a fire of passion and curiosity, always seeking interesting fuel for its sustenance.
And even now, hearts that remain open to the stranger can save lives, because loneliness is as devastatingly dangerous as a desert.
