Children and Youth Are Welcome

Religious Education for children and youth is offered during both Sunday services.

During the 9:15 service, Pre-K through 5th graders meet for Spirit Play, a Montessori-like approach to UU religious education.

During the 11:15 service, curriculum-based classes for pre-kindergarten through 12th grade are offered.

Nursery care for children ages 3 and under is available during both services.

Children and youth are encouraged to participate in the first part of the worship service. Early in the service, there is a special segment called “For All Ages” in which children are invited to join in front of the stage for a story related to the sermon topic. Following “For All Ages”, children go to their religious education classes and youth go to their meeting room.

For first-time visitors, teachers and greeters are present to show you to your child’s classroom. You’re welcome to accompany your child if you want to sit in and listen.

High school age youth participate in Young Religious Unitarian Universalists (“YRUU”), a youth-run and adult-advised group active in our local church community and in the larger district-wide youth community.

Dress for children, except for very special occasions, is the same as for parents: whatever is comfortable.

Spirit Play

On Sundays during the 9:15 a.m. church service, Mount Vernon Unitarian Church offers Spirit Play  to Pre-K – 1st grade, and during the 11:15 a.m. service , to Pre-K – 1st grade. Spirit Play is an all-ages curriculum, which helps children live their own answers to the existential questions:

Where did we come from?

What are we doing here?

How do we chose to live our lives?

What happens when we die?

Spirit Play uses the Montessori approach for the structure of the class.  As in Montessori, the key elements are the classroom environment and the teachers.  These elements free the children to work at their own pace on their own issues after an initial lesson.  After a story circle with the Storyteller, children chose an art response or work with a story previously heard.  When work time ends, children clean up and then share a feast (snack) with the Storyteller.

The following Sunday morning classes curriculum-based classes are offered during the 11:15 a.m. church service in the 2015 – 2016 church year:

1st – 3rd Grade: Love Will Guide Us Signs of Faith
