Volunteer Opportunities

This page tells some of the ways you can serve MVUC and have a good time doing it.

Help With Annual Book and Art Sale – March 25-27
Signup sheets to help with Book Sale are in the Commons. Help is needed Sunday, March 21 through Saturday, March 27. Also look for Book Sale discount coupons on the credenza. Donations of used art and art objects are needed, as well. Please place your donations in the Hollin Hall kitchen or in the book drop in the parking lot.

Coordinator for Sunday Morning Refreshments
Duties include keeping a calendar of Setup and Cleanup Volunteers. Remind volunteers by e-mail of their specific service date and let them know if they should bring supplies. Inventory and shop for supplies for Refreshment Hour. Notify Church administration when we are low on cups for coffee or juice. When low on coffee, arrange for fair-market coffee to be purchased and delivered to Church. To volunteer, e-mail or phone Kay Youngflesh, kyoungflesh@comcast.net  or 703-683-0890.

Green Sanctuary Task Force Member - If you want to support greener life styles, we can use your enthusiasm and time. We need more volunteers to serve on the Green Sanctuary task force, come up with new initiatives and help execute them. Contact Bill Alsmeyer-Johnson, bill@alsjohn.com.

Hospitality on Sunday mornings - Set-up and Clean-up Volunteers Needed for Refreshment Hour
Set-up volunteers bring sweets, make coffee and arrange table and coffee counter before First Service. Clean-up volunteers do so after Second Service (refresh and straighten up table and coffee counter as soon as Second Service ends and start cleanup 20 minutes after that.) We specifically need Cleanup Volunteers for 5th Sunday (there are only about 3 per year). We also need substitutes and permanent volunteers to setup and cleanup for some Sundays. To volunteer, e-mail or phone Kay Youngflesh, kyoungflesh@comcast.net  or 703-683-0890

Personnel Committee Member - Help determine policies that govern staff salaries, benefits, and working conditions. Monthly evening meetings. Contact Linda Walton, lwalton2@cox.net.

Provide Flowers for a Sunday Service - Floral tributes can remember a loved one; acknowledge the efforts of a church group, committee or cause; or just celebrate the day and the joy that flowers and living things offer us. Contact Kim Cullen Cobb at kimjcc@mac.com or 703-836-0153.

Support local homeless members of our community by making dinners or breakfast bags and/or spending the night at the VIC HOP (Ventures in Community Hypothermia Project) Shelter, just off Route 1. MVUC helps in this important way Thursday nights for 4 months, December. See this website for information (Social Justice) or contact Helen Lounsbury, 703-346- 4401, HelenLounsbury@yahoo.com.

Usher for Sunday Services - With one other person, host either the 9:30 or 11:15 service. Hand out hymnals, count attendance, collect and count the offering. Contact Bruce Burrows, burrows8473@aol.com.

Wednesday Fellowship Setup - First Wednesday of the month, starting at 5:30 pm, help set up for the fellowship, arrange tables and chairs, serve food, or clean-up. Contact Georgia Pourchot gpourchot@yahoo.com.
