Families, singles, friends of all ages join together for a relaxing – but sometimes competitive – evening of board, trivia, and performance games. Play an old favorite, or check out a new one! And what would Games Night be without a potluck? Bring a favorite dish to share. For more information contact MVUC’s Religious Education Assistant.

MVUC Annual UNICEF Halloween Carnival
Sunday, October 29, 10:15am at the Carriage House (between services)
It’s time to plan your costume, and put MVUC’s UNICEF Halloween Carnival on your calendar! Youth will be hosting a haunted house, games and fun Sunday, October 29 at the Carriage House. This will take place between services beginning at 10:15 a.m., so if you’re attending second service, come early. Donations and proceeds from ticket sales will be given to UNICEF. Able to help set up or clean up? Contact MVUC’s Religious Education Assistant.

Spirit Play During First Service
Spirit Play is held during the first service. It is a “one room classroom” for ages 4-11, and provides children with a spiritual, more student-centered experience based on a Montessori format. Families can take advantage of this in several ways and for several reasons:

  • Children can attend Spirit Play while parents enjoy the first service then volunteer in the RE program during second service.
  • Families can attend Spirit Play and 9:15 worship in order to participate in team sports and other activities in the late morning.
  • Visiting families have a substantive program for their children to experience
  • Families wishing to have a more contemplative experience for both young and old can choose to attend at 9:15.

While RE numbers are up across the board, fewer children are attending Spirit Play at the first service. We will continue to offer Spirit Play through the end of October, then reevaluate the situation. Would you like more information about Spirit Play, or are you sure your children will be attending during first service? Please send an email to Ann Richards.

ARE: Laughter Yoga
2nd Sunday Monthly, between services, 10:30 – 11:00 a.m., Hollin Hall Blue Room
Clair Trivedi Brolin, Instructor
Laughter Yoga (Hasya Yoga) combines unconditional laughter with yogic breathing (Pranayama). Anyone can laugh for no reason, without relying on humor, jokes or comedy. Laughter is simulated as a body exercise in a group but with eye contact and childlike playfulness, it soon may turn into real and contagious laughter. The concept of Laughter Yoga is based on a scientific fact that the body cannot differentiate between fake and real laughter… one gets the same physiological and psychological benefits! Register in the Commons or by contacting MVUC’s Religious Education Assistant.
You do not have to be happy to practice this joyful exercise but it can make you feel happier with practice (usually after about 15 minutes.) Everyone is welcome and anyone can do Laughter Yoga. No experience required.

ARE: Sitting Meditation
Sundays, 7-8:30pm, Carriage House
We practice sitting meditation and study readings from Jack Kornfeld, Thich Nhat Hanh, Sharon Salzberg, and others. The readings provide encouragement, instruction and support for those with no previous experience in Buddhist meditation. We practice for our own benefit and the benefit of others. Introductory instruction is available for newcomers. Led by Dale Peebles. You do not need to register in advance.
For more information contact MVUC’s Religious Education Assistant.

ARE: Contemplative Group
Sundays, 9am, Hollin Hall Sun Porch
If you feel drawn to deepening your spiritual life through meditation, join the Contemplative Group. We come together informally for celebration, silence, and friendship. The sitting meditation begins with simple chants from different traditions. Selected readings are followed by a 20-minute period of silence, broken by song. Afterwards we have sharing and fellowship until the MVUC main service begins. Whatever your background and experience, you are welcome.

Fire Drill October 29
Our annual fire drill will be held during second service on October 29. This year we will be evacuating the Meeting House, including the nursery. If you are in worship and the fire alarm goes off, please proceed to the meeting place (behind the Meeting House on the Memorial Walks). Do not go to the nursery or any other classroom to find your children. The children will be held until the fire drill is over and you are able to pick them up.
