Mount Vernon Unitarian has a vibrant music program. Most groups participate in worship services, and they are also a great source of church community and fun.
Musical Instruments – Our Chapel has professionally designed acoustics; the piano is an 8-foot Hoffmann in excellent repair; the organ is a three-manual Johannus electronic. Other acoustic and digital pianos and music spaces are located throughout Hollin Hall and the Carriage House.
Adult Choir rehearses Wednesday evenings and sings at the 11:15 worship service about 3 out of 4 Sundays per month. The music ranges from contemporary through classical, with occasional turns in folk, gospel, and show tunes. Highlights include special music presentations for holidays and our spring “All Music Sunday.” New members welcome!
Youth Choir Voices of Youth (grades 6-12): This group comes together to perform several times a year with contemporary music that often embraces current social themes. They meet after second service. New members welcome!
Children’s Choir (grades 1- 5): Our children sometimes sing during services on special occasions. They also are the core of our popular annual children’s “Holiday Pageant,” a colorful, costumed and staged music adventure! New members welcome!
Special Groups that come together occasionally throughout the year include:
- Windmill Jazz Collective is a jazz instrumental group that meets twice a month and plays for worship too.
- Drum Circles gives everyone a chance to meet and make a joyful noise.
- Liturgical Dance group gives physical expression to prayer and worship, as well as provide gentle exercise.
All groups listed welcome new members.
