Who We Are
The Partner Church Committee fosters relationships with Mount Vernon Unitarian Church’s two partner churches in Szentháromság, Romania and Mawlat, India, their Unitarian congregations and their villages. Partnership involves mutual cultural understanding, exchange and spiritual connections. Other support includes financial contributions from MVUC that enable church and educational activities in our partner congregations and villages. The MVUC Partner Church Committee provides assistance to help improve the lives of the congregants and the villagers of its partners. Personal communication and visits are vital parts of partnership.
The Partner Church Committee is a standing committee of the Social Justice Council in the Our Larger World Program area. The Partner Church Committee strives to continue to enhance and deepen the relationship between our congregation and our partner churches in Romania and India. We continue to educate and create awareness about partnership with members and friends of MVUC. The Partner Church Committee provides the following activities:
· Five brunches held throughout the year
· Annual Partner Church dinner
· Alternative Gifts program at holiday time
· Special Collection during the Annual Partner Church Service
Szentharomsag Scholarship Program
MVUC members and friends have generously supported students in our partner church village in Szentharomsag, Transylvania for more than 14 years. The village school only goes to the eighth grade, so students have to travel elsewhere to attend high school, trade school and university. Sponsors help pay the costs of tuition, room and board and travel for students who otherwise could not afford the expenses. Last year we had almost 40 students supported by MVUC members and friends. Sponsors are needed for this school year. The amount varies from $350 to $1000, and a number of students have multiple sponsors. If you would like to learn more or help sponsor a student, please contact Lisa Gillispie, firstname.lastname@example.org.
Want to visit our partner church village? Bake bread in an outdoor oven? Go for a horse drawn carriage ride? See an ostrich farm? Connect with Unitarian history? Stand on the rock where Ferenc David proclaimed “God is One”? Travel in the best kept secret of Eastern Europe? Bond with your fellow travelers and families in our partner village? See Budapest, the glittering jewel on the Danube? Follow in the footsteps of Vlad Dracul? I’ve had a number of people express an interest in organizing another group trip for the summer. If you are at all interested, please email Lisa Gillispie, email@example.com.
