  • at 9:15 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. between Labor Day in September and Memorial Day in May
  • at 10:00 a.m. on select holidays and during summer months

When there are two Sunday services, the 9:15 service is usually the more quiet one, and includes a brief meditation. The 11:15 service includes music from the choir and may feature additional elements. Check our calendar of events for latest service schedule.

In between services is a coffee hour with refreshments and conversation. We welcome you to relax in our commons and enjoy the friendly atmosphere, and a wide selection of beverages and foods to enjoy.

You can listen to some of the recent Sermons recorded at Sunday services.  Besides weekly worship we also conduct other ceremonies, such as Child Dedications, and Memorial Services (at the website, Hollin Hall Memorial Services). Our church and its beautiful grounds are home to many weddings. If you are considering a marriage at MVUC, our minister may be available to officiate. Explore opportunities to host your wedding or special event on the Weddings and Events page.

What to Expect in a Sunday Service

Worship services include familiar elements such as a sermon, hymns, readings and an offering. Our minister is in the pulpit about three times per month, except for summer months when she is off for vacation and study break.  When the minister is not present, we have guest speakers who may be from our own church community or we may have guest ministers and lay speakers.

Worship services offer spiritual experience, while also engaging intellectual ideas.  Our children are present for the first part of worship before they leave for their religious education classes.  Occasionally we have intergenerational services  designed to engage people of all ages, and children remain in the chapel.  Sometimes we add creative elements such as dramatic readings, liturgical dance or poetry.

Music During Services

All of our services have a strong musical presence through our choir and guest musicians.  It is common to also have our own talented community members provide music at worship services. We are very proud of the beautiful Music made possible by our Music Director, Mark Zimmerman, and Pianist Yee Von Ng.

Lifespan Spiritual Growth participates in worship at Mt. Vernon Unitarian Church in many ways.

The entire congregation, including the children, meet for the first 15 minutes of every service. This part of worship usually includes welcoming words, a hymn, a musical piece, and a “Time for All Ages” which is often a participatory story.

Certain services, such as those before the Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter holidays, are Multigenerational. Everyone, adults and children, worship together for the entire time. These services frequently include worship elements that are geared to participants of all ages, and are developed by the Minister in collaboration with the Director of Lifespan Spiritual Growth.

Lifespan Spiritual Growth also features worship throughout the year that is on the theme of learning. This includes an annual service presented by our high schoolers, and a service led by the Lifespan Spiritual Growth Council.

Mt. Vernon Unitarian Church considers participation in worship an experience in spiritual growth. For this reason, families, youth and children are often involved in presenting stories, doing readings, lighting the chalice, participating in the music portions of the services and in almost any other way you can think of.

In addition, life milestones are recognized with certain rituals during the worship service. Read more about these, as well as general information about worship at https://mvuc.org/learning/childrensclasses/
