The Deacons of Defense, who travelled- armed- with members of CORE (the Congress of Racial Equity) across the gulf south, played a critical role in the Civil Rights movement that helped keep our people safe against klan violence. Learning from the complexities of 2020 and our movement histories, lets lean into the ways we can faithfully keep safe those among us who are most vulnerable and fighting for justice with their very existence. Lets explore this: what are the serious ways we understand self-defense and safety as part of our labor as Unitarian Universalists.
